What are Product Systems?

Key Concepts
July 18, 2024

A product system is a continuously evolving product ecosystem. The products in the system are nodes, they interact with other products in the system, as well as external technologies. They sometimes require intricate integration. Often offered in multiple configurations, they may also receive continuous updates or be customizable.

A commercial-grade thermostat is an example of a product in a product system. It might interface with multiple sensors and control products from various manufacturers, connect to multiple building management systems, be mountable both internally and externally on different substrates, and have variations for different regions around the world. The thermostat’s functionality depends on other nodes in the system. In contrast, a standalone product like a pair of shoes is not very complex; its functionality is discrete and does not require additional products to function.
